What needs updating?

Use a predictable rhythm

Allow automatic security updates on ordinary employee devices. Choose one monthly maintenance window for restarts and non-urgent updates. Review routers, printers, and other appliances quarterly because many do not update themselves reliably.

Before a major update

  1. Confirm a recent backup exists and can be opened.
  2. Check that the device has free disk space and stable power.
  3. Record any essential application versions or license details.
  4. Update one less-critical device first and test normal work.
  5. Tell users when restarts or downtime will happen.

Install safely

Get updates from the built-in update screen, the vendor's official app, or its official website. Ignore pop-ups claiming a driver or security tool is urgently required. Keep laptops plugged in, and do not interrupt firmware updates.

Verify afterward

Restart, sign in, open essential applications, print a test document if printing matters, check VPN or remote access, and confirm backups resume. Record the date and any exceptions.

Replace unsupported products. A device or application that no longer receives security fixes is a growing business risk. Do not treat antivirus as a substitute for supported software.

When not to DIY

Get help before updating a server, firewall, business database, medical or industrial system, or anything with undocumented custom software. Those need a rollback plan and an owner who understands the dependencies.
